FlowHead (Fluid Optimisation Workflows for Highly Effective Automotive Development Processes) is a 'small to medium size focused research project' funded by the European Commission under THEME  SST.2007-RTD-1: Competitive product development from February 2009 to January 2012.

Aims and Scope

The aim of FlowHead is to develop fast gradient-based optimisation methods using adjoint sensitivities for automotive flow design. This is done by:

  • Development and enhancing of a range of adjoint solvers, including commercially licensed solvers, open source solvers and research codes
  • Development of shape optimization methods based on sensitivity information employing different types of design variables
  • Development of topology optimization based on sensitivity information includingmanufacturing constraints
  • -Integration of the new methods into a professional software environment (“industrial demonstrator”) to provide product development process integration
